In 1672, the Baroness de Mondford is falsely accused of witchcraft and condemned to galley slavery, where she faces systematic torture and sexual exploitation. After her galley is attacked by Arab pirates, she and her accuser, Countess du Vivier, are taken as slaves to a market in Tunis. The Baroness is dehumanized and sold as a beast of burden, enduring further cruelty in a remote desert village.
