The Road to Repentance (Georges Pichard)

Christine, formerly Abbess Solange de Buzan, endures extreme penance at a convent, viewing her starvation, humiliation, and lashings as divine purification. When Gautier Tortille infiltrates to rescue her, he fails to overcome her religious delusions and abandons the attempt, leaving her to anticipate further torment. Her mother visits, hoping to convince her to leave, but leaves horrified by Christine's fanatical devotion to her suffering.
